What to Pack for Your First Swim Session?

Whether you're an experienced swimmer, a pro, or just a water enthusiast, having the right gear can make all the difference for your pool session. Let’s break down some essentials and tips to make sure you’re prepared for your first swim!

1. What Should I Pack for the Pool?

  • Swimwear: Choose something comfortable and designed for the pool. You don’t want it too tight or loose—freedom of movement is key!

  • Swim cap: Adds buoyancy and reduces drag.

  • Goggles: A must for clear vision underwater!

  • Sandals or flip-flops

  • Water bottle: Stay hydrated!

  • Towel or bathrobe

2. Should I Wear a Nose Clip or Earplugs?

This really comes down to personal preference. Earplugs aren’t necessary unless you suffer from frequent ear infections or dislike water in your ears. Nose clips, on the other hand, can be useful for backstroke or when using a snorkel but avoid relying on them when learning proper swimming techniques.

3. Do I need Training Fins?

Tougher Workouts

When you strap these on, you're adding resistance to your kicks. It’s like turning up the difficulty on your workout! This extra challenge forces your legs to work harder, which means more muscle engagement and a bigger cardio boost. More resistance = more calories burned. Think of it as adding weights to your swim.

Better Ankle Flexibility

Swim fins give you a gentle push, helping you feel how your feet should be moving through the water. Over time, you’ll notice improved ankle flexibility, making your kicks even more efficient.

So, fins or no fins? If you want an extra challenge and to improve ankle flexibility, fins are a great choice. But mixing up your swim routine—sometimes with fins, sometimes without—will give you the best of both worlds.

4. How Deep Are the Swimming Pools in Singapore?

Public swimming pools in Singapore typically have:

  • Wading pools (~0.4m): Perfect for toddlers and families.

  • Teaching pools (~0.9m): Great for beginners learning to swim.

  • 50m lap pools (1.2m to 1.8m): Best for serious swimmers and athletes looking to log some distance.
